The purpose of this website is to make the facts of what has happened to Shawn open to the public. The more eyeballs, the better. Let's make sure the judicial system properly handles Shawn's case.
Be sure to check out the various files available on this website for more information!
There is currently a writ of habeus corpus that was submitted to the Placer County superior court, which should result in Shawn's freedom in 2023. The writ was submitted in October 2023. Let's make sure Placer County processes this appeal according to the law, and also in a timely manner.
Be sure to monitor his case! If you'd like to make a donation to Shawn's legal expenses, please see: https://gofund.me/c7df251b
Shawn is a highly intelligent, capable go-getter. After being incarcerated for so long, he is eager to work and to contribute. Upon his release, he has short-term plans to become a truck driver, and longer-term goals of getting involved in real estate (flipping, short-term rentals, etc.).
Shawn never really knew for sure who his biological father was; he's still not 100% confident, though he has a strong guess.
His mom had him when she was just 21. She was poor, and addicted to drugs. She gave up custody of Shawn and his younger brother, Shane, in the early 1990's. Neither of them was ever adopted, and had very hard lives as a result of their mother's abandonment.
After Shawn was raised by the State of California, at 18 he was let loose--without a home, without money, without even a jacket. No support. No contacts. Almost nothing.
For the most part, Shawn's biological family has been absent from his life, his whole life. Shawn is the product of being raised by the state.
Like so many Americans, and people from all over the world, when a child is not given a home, safety, and love--life becomes very hard, and there are cascade effects from the trauma of abandonment and a lack of real love and support in a child's life. Amazingly, Shawn is still quite a loving person, despite never having really been given healthy love as a child.
Dr. Angela is at the helm of the efforts to Help Free Shawn.
She has a doctoral degree in Human and Organizational Learning from George Washington University. She spent 15 years working in the federal government, including six years at the Executive Office of the President. She's a former White House intern, California Governor's Office intern, and thought leader in the field of Polymathy Studies.
She is passionate about making the world a better place, including her goal to #helpfreeshawn.
Dr. Angela believes Shawn was overly punished with a life sentence in a situation where the victim was not even injured, detectives tampered with evidence, the only victim has repeatedly recanted his testimony and confessed to courtroom perjury, and jurors admit to being confused by their instructions.
Plus, the laws have changed regarding "aiding and abetting," and Shawn was only a "helper" in the "crime" he participated in.
#helpfreeshawn is an effort that Dr. Angela has spearheaded in order to right the wrongs that our broken justice system allowed to happen to Shawn. Angela believes Shawn is a victim of our broken government, many times over, whether it is how the California Child Protective Services failed him and his family, or how the foster and orphanage system inflicted many traumas on him as a child, or how the prosecution made up a narrative and then only shared the "facts" that fit that storyline, regardless of the full and accurate truth of what occurred, or how the prison system has inflicted further traumas upon him and other decent people who made mistakes in their past, and are paying their dues in prison. Our government has failed to do what it says it will do, time and time again; instead of helping, it has only caused more harm to Shawn.
As someone who has spent the majority of her life in government service, Dr. Angela is a voice for fixing what is broken in government, rather than denying and ignoring it. The only way for government to improve itself, and its services to the citizens it exists to serve, is to admit what is broken, and get about the business of fixing it.
